Kids Guitars

A variety of kids guitars are available today to suit kids of any size who wish to learn to play the guitar.  Kids guitars can be found at many online music-focused stores as well as musical instrument shops in most cities.

What is a kids guitar?

In general, a kids guitar is a smaller size meant for kids who are learning to play guitar for the first time.  A normal guitar is a rather large instrument and will not be appropriate for smaller children.  They may have trouble reaching both the frets and the strings at the same time, or may find that the fingerboard is too large for smaller hands.

Many kids guitars will also come with a guitar case and accessories such as a music book or DVD that gives some tips for how to play the guitar so that your child can get started right away.  It’s important for parents to have a realistic expectation when buying their child’s first guitar.  Unfortunately a guitar is not a very friendly instrument in the sense that most kids (and adults) will take a good amount of practice before playing anything that sounds decent.  Its not an instrument that can be picked up overnight.  In fact, it’s the opposite: guitar for many people is a life long pursuit.  Guitar lessons with a teacher will be the best way for your child to learn the guitar.  It’s a good idea to get a teacher’s advice on which guitar to get: guitars differ in subtle ways and choosing the wrong one may make learning to play it much more difficult than necessary.  For example, the type of strings on the guitar will determine how much effort and finger strength are required to play clear notes.

Many kids guitars are really meant to be toys without the expectation that real music will be played on them.  Others are truly a quality guitar musical instrument in a kid-friendly size.  In general, the prices will be as expected: toy guitars will be priced like toys, and quality guitars will be priced like quality musical instruments.  Don’t pay for a toy and expect concert guitar quality.  On the other hand, it’s a good idea to make sure your child is genuinely interested before buying an expensive guitar.  You may be able to borrow one from a teacher or rent one before ensuring that your child is interested enough in order to buy a guitar with the confidence that it won’t be played twice and then be left in the closet forever.
